Scanning the bee wings

The procedure which follows was my attempt to measure the discordal shift and the cubital index of a sample of my black bees. I realize that more bees should be in the sample but my intention was just to get an idea how close they were to the cited values. 4 hives were sampled; between 30 and 20 bees being taken from each hive.

BIBBA quotes values of 1.3 - 2.1 for the spread of the cubital index with a mean of 1.7, and with a negative discordal shift.

The image shows the scan of 21 right-hand wings as produced using an Epson 3 in 1 scanner at a resolution of 2400 dpi. The image shown is only 15% of the original.

The next step was to cut and paste each image. The images were placed in a folder and sampled one at a time. I do not have a PC but use a Mac and as I was unable to find any program which would have done the sampling for me automatically, I looked at each wing individually.
